“There are two million South Asian Americans – at least those were the numbers we had to use and were derived from the 2000 Census. But as we’ve written before, the numbers of the community were suspected as being underestimated in the previous Censuses. The data from the 2010 Census has been slowly release this year and last month the Asian Pacific American Legal Center released their latest report “A Community of Contrasts; Asian Americans in the United States: 2011″ (download PDF here) which has a comprehensive national community analysis.?
“Engineering junior Michelle Leong was recently elected chair of the Asian Pacific Student Coalition. Leong — who is the outgoing vice chair of political affairs — will lead the Asian umbrella group for the next calendar year.”

“Are APA lawyers still saddled with a nerdy, not-ready-for-prime-time image? Is this the way law firms and corporations perceive Asian Americans, or the way we perceive ourselves? Whose stereotype is it?”
“These numbers show that there’s a significant portion of the Asian American community that doesn’t follow the stereotype, and are significantly under-represented and under-served in our community. In addition to having the lowest income, being the least educated, and highest unemployment, these Asian Americans are also least likely to seek out public assistance, as the numbers show much fewer of these Asian Americans taking advantage of government programs than want the numbers show for negatively affected populations. As the report recommends, there needs to be much more outreach to these affected communities to make them aware of and help them access programs that may be of help to them. And that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg.”
Does China’s rise mean the end of one of America’s most storied ethnic enclaves?
“Recent years have seen stories of Chinese “sea turtles”—those who are educated overseas and migrate back to China—lured by Chinese-government incentives that include financial aid, cash bonuses, tax breaks, and housing assistance. In 2008, Shi Yigong, a molecular biologist at Princeton, turned down a prestigious $10 million research grant to return to China and become the dean of life sciences at Beijing’s Tsinghua University. ”
Because I got here waaaaaaaay to early for my flight back home, and because I won’t have much time with internet when I am at home due to family Thanksgiving traditions…
I am thankful for…
-Having a second (possibly a first given how much time I spend there…) home at PAACH, with people who totally understand it if I want to spend all my free time there
-Having learned so much about the APA community not only here at Penn, but also in general. BIG Shoutout and much love to my APALI Fall’11 Class - Team Awesome!
-Having made so many friends and being so inspired by the people I’ve met here at Penn, both within and outside the APA community.
-For the future of the APA community, again not only here at Penn, but in general. Big things are gonna happen for us. I know it.
Happy Holidays, Safe Travels, and See you all again Sunday evening :D

“Ultimately, the creation of a certificate program depends on the administration and faculty who are willing to commit themselves to teaching these courses consistently,” Du said. “But student support is extremely important because if there isn’t enough student interest, then there just isn’t going to be a program.”
